How HeatShield Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
HeatShield makes a legitimate product. The Cerfractory flue sealant system does what it claims in the right conditions. But we’ve pulled enough cameras through Clifton flues to know exactly where the product reaches its limits, and where installers cut corners.
- Cerfractory delamination at the flue tile joints. HeatShield’s Cerfractory material is a blend of ceramic and refractory cement, and it bonds to the clay tile surface. On homes in the Athenia and Richfield sections of Clifton where the chimney runs cold in winter, the freeze-thaw cycle works the bond loose over five to seven years. The material doesn’t fail first; the tile surface it’s stuck to does. Our fix depends on how much has let go. Small patches, we reapply with proper surface prep. - Gaps at the smoke chamber transition. HeatShield works on the vertical flue, but the smoke chamber below it is where we see problems on 1950s and 1960s Clifton homes. We find this on camera because the Cerfractory looks fine, but the smoke chamber behind it is cracked. - Improper installation over glazed tile. Cerfractory won’t bond to glazed clay tile without mechanical profiling first. Some installers skip that step. The result looks fine for two seasons, then hairline cracks appear running vertically along the tile seams. When we pull the camera up a flue and see glazed tile under cracked Cerfractory, we know what happened. Fix is usually a stainless liner; there’s no reliable way to re-bond over failed glaze once the surface is compromised.
- HeatShield Joint Repair System failures at the flue offsets. On taller Clifton chimneys, the flue doesn’t run straight. There’s an offset where the vertical section shifts to clear framing. HeatShield’s joint repair works on the straight runs but we’ve seen the material fail at the offset points because the installer applied it too thick under the smoke shelf and it sagged before it cured. The camera shows a bulge and a crack right at the offset. That’s a candidate for a full liner, not a patch.
- Cerfractory over a existing sloppy liner. If a previous owner had a cheap stainless liner installed by a trunk-slammer and then someone put HeatShield over the top sections, you end up with a hybrid system where two materials expand at different rates. The thermal cycling in Clifton’s winters and humid summers eventually separates them.
