Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Clifton Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney caps and cap components across Clifton, with most installations running between $425 and $875 depending on flue size, chase condition, and cap model. We carry Gelco caps and components on our trucks, and in most cases we can complete the installation same day. The way Clifton homeowners usually discover they need us is the same story every fall: water stains on the ceiling near the fireplace, a cap that’s rusted through at the base, or a chimney cap that’s simply gone missing after a nor’easter.

Gelco builds their caps with a stainless steel hood over a galvanized or copper base, and around here the base is almost always what fails first. If you’re on this page, you’ve probably already identified the problem. What you haven’t figured out yet is what it will cost to fix it right. That’s what we’ll walk through.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco caps fall into three main categories we see in Clifton: single-flue caps (models like the SC series), multi-flue caps that span the entire chimney crown, and custom chase covers for prefab fireplaces. The single-flue models are the most common, and they attach to the flue tile or liner with pressure screws and a built-in screen mesh. Multi-flue units sit on the crown itself and get lag-bolted or tap-con’d into the masonry.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches people: a Gelco cap sized for a standard 8×8 clay flue tile will NOT seat on an 8-inch round stainless liner without a mounting adapter. We see this in Clifton chimneys where an older clay flue was relined at some point. The cap base is square; the liner top is round. If you measure the outside of your flue tile and order to that number, you’ll be close. If you have a round liner, measure the diameter and tell us when you call.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Gelco caps are well built, but their uninsulated single-flue models are known for base rust after four to six winters in North Jersey. When a customer brings that up, we sometimes recommend an equivalent Olympia or DuraFlex stainless cap if it fits the application better. We’ll show you both options with prices and let you decide. Level Two Chimney Clifton is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, which means we stock what actually works for Clifton weather, not just what one brand catalog offers.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Water in the firebox after rain. This is usually the cap hood rusted through or the base seal cracked. Water is getting past the cap and running straight down the flue walls.
  • Debris, nests, or animal sounds in the chimney. The mesh screen on your cap has a hole, or the cap has shifted. Birds and squirrels don’t need much of an opening. We pulled three squirrel nests out of a Gelco cap in the Athenia section of Clifton last March.
  • Visible rust streaks running down the flue tile or crown. That’s the cap base failing. Once rust starts, it spreads under the mounting surface and the cap loosens.
  • Draft problems or smoke backing up into the room. A dislodged cap or a blocked screen restricts airflow. Not every draft issue is a cap problem, but a cap that’s shifted is a common cause.
  • The cap is loose enough to wiggle by hand, or it’s gone entirely. If you can move it, rain can get under it. If it’s missing, the flue is open to whatever Clifton weather sends.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what a Gelco chimney cap installation runs in Clifton, written out so you know what you’re paying for before we show up:

  • Single-flue stainless Gelco cap, standard size, installed: $425-$575
  • Single-flue cap with custom sizing for oval or oversized flues: $550-$725
  • Multi-flue cap spanning crown, installed with masonry anchors: $675-$950
  • Chase cover replacement (prefab chimneys): $875-$1,400, depending on steel gauge and fabrication

These numbers include the part, any mounting adapter or hardware, installation labor, and a written warranty on the work. The range depends on what we find: a straightforward swap on an accessible roof is at the low end. A steep pitch, a rusted-out base that needs cutting off, or a flue that needs an adapter is at the high end. You’ll get a written price and scope before anything is done, per Clause 1 of the Haven Standard. No verbal estimates that shift.

Every installation includes a photo record of the old cap, the new cap installed, and the final seal. That’s Clause 4, and we’ve been doing it since 2009.

Key takeaways:

  • Installed Gelco cap pricing in Clifton is $425-$875 for most homes
  • Written price before work starts, always
  • Camera-scan inspection included to confirm flue condition under the cap
  • 365-Day Done Right Promise on every installation

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check your cap from the ground: look for visible rust, a tilt, or missing mesh. That doesn’t require a ladder. What we don’t recommend is climbing onto a Clifton roof with a cordless drill, especially not on an older Victorian in the Dublin neighborhood or on a steep colonial in Richfield, where the roof pitch is unforgiving. A chimney cap sits at the highest point of the house, and the consequences of a fall are life-changing. We carry fall protection and a second set of eyes on every job.

If your flue is masonry and the cap base has rusted through, removal often requires cutting hardware or working against rusted pressure screws. It’s not a fifteen-minute swap. If you want to watch, we’re happy to show you exactly what we’re doing from the ground. If you want to call it in, the number is (551) 282-9640. Corrine Halstead and the crew run cameras in Clifton every week, and we’ll tell you honestly whether you need a full replacement or just a base seal.
