Which Famco Models This Applies To

Famco’s crown line covers most standard masonry and prefab chimney terminations. The two you’ll see most in Clifton homes are the Famco form-poured crown (sold as a metal form you fill with mortar on site) and the Famco prefabricated replacement crown that ships pre-cast and drops over the flue tile. Both fit round flue tiles from 6″ to 13″ inside diameter, and square or rectangular tiles up to 13″x13″.

The compatibility gotcha we see weekly: a homeowner buys a 13″x13″ replacement crown assuming it fits, but their flue tile measures 13″x13″ outside dimension. Famco crowns are sized to the inside flue tile opening plus standard mortar joint thickness. If your tile is a true 13″ outside, you need the 11″x11″ crown. Measure the opening, not the outside. For OEM versus aftermarket: Famco’s own crowns hold up well in NJ weather, but we’ve seen the pre-cast ones develop hairline cracks at the pour seams after six or seven winters. A quality aftermarket equivalent cast with a higher PSI mix can outlast OEM, but it has to match the flue tile dimensions exactly and include a proper drip edge. Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks you can trace with a fingernail. Freeze-thaw cycles in Clifton winters push water into micro-cracks, it freezes and expands, and the crack widens. Each winter makes it worse. This is the stage where a repair, not a replacement, is usually still possible.
• Spalling, or chunks of the crown surface flaking off. The mortar surface starts shedding small pieces and you’ll find them in the gutter or on the roof below the chimney. Spalling means the crown has lost its protective surface and water is now soaking into the crown body.
• Water staining on the ceiling or walls near the chimney. A cracked crown lets rain drip down the outside of the flue liner and into the chase or masonry. The stain appears months after the crack forms because the water has to work through the structure first.
• Damp smell in the firebox after rain. Water travels down the flue and sits in the smoke chamber, and the musty odor rises back into the room. If you smell it after a storm, the crown is the first thing we check.
• Efflorescence, the white powdery deposit on the brick below the crown. Water moving through masonry dissolves salts and leaves them on the surface. It looks like frost and signals that water has been passing through the chimney for a while. By the time you see efflorescence, the crown has usually been leaking for more than a season.
