Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Clifton Owner’s Guide

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield makes two families of chimney caps that show up most often on Clifton homes. The first is the rectangular or square multi-flue cap, typically mounted over a clay tile crown with expansion anchors. The second is the round single-flue cap, which slides over the flue tile or a round liner and locks with set screws. If you’re not sure which one you have, look for a stamped model number on the underside of the skirt or on the mesh band. Copperfield stamps a date code there as well. If the stamp is gone, measure the outside dimensions of your flue tile: a 8×8 cap won’t fit a 8×13 flue, and a surprising number of people buy the wrong size online.

The compatible range includes the SC, SCM, and RC series caps. For a round flue, you’ll want inside and outside diameters. For a square or rectangular flue, you’ll want the outside tile dimensions plus at least one inch of skirt coverage on each side. If the original was a Copperfield SC mounted on a chase cover, the bolt pattern usually carries over, but we verify every time, because no two Clifton chimneys wear the same weather the same way.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Copperfield caps are well made, but the difference between an original-equipment cap and a quality aftermarket equivalent, for this application, comes down to the mesh gauge and the gauge of the skirt. If we can’t get a Copperfield fast, we’ll tell you and show you a comparable cap from the tray before we touch anything. We stock standard sizes on the truck. Odd sizes are one to two days out through Haven’s supply network.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. Rain is getting past the cap and soaking into the flue. In Clifton’s freeze-thaw cycle, that moisture then works into the masonry and worsens the damage every winter.
• Rust streaks on the chimney brick below the cap. The cap’s steel has rusted through, and the rust is carrying down the face of the chimney. Copperfield caps are typically stainless or galvalume; if you see rust, the protective coating has failed.
• Tilted or lifted cap after a storm. Wind in the Clifton area regularly tops 45 mph in spring squalls. If the cap is sitting at an angle or one edge has lifted, the anchor points have failed and the flue is partly exposed.
• Animal sounds from the fireplace or chimney. A damaged mesh band lets birds and squirrels in. We’ve pulled nests out of chimneys in the Athenia neighborhood that had been building up for weeks while the cap sat broken.
• Debris falling into the fireplace. Twigs, moss, and roof grit coming down the flue means the cap mesh has torn or the skirt has pulled away from the tile. It only gets worse from there.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground: whether the cap looks tilted, whether the mesh band has visible tears, whether there’s rust staining on the brick below. What we don’t recommend is getting on a ladder to remove a cap yourself. Clifton rooflines are often steep, ladder setup around a chimney is awkward even for pros, and a dropped cap or dropped tool off a two-story pitch is a serious liability. If the cap is rusted through, the skirt edges are sharp enough to open a hand.
