Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The Clifton Owner’s Guide

A failing Olympia Chimney chimney cap in Clifton typically costs between $185 and $420 to replace, parts and labor included, and most installations take under two hours once we’re on site. We keep Olympia-compatible caps in standard flue sizes on the truck, so in most Clifton homes we can complete the swap the same day we inspect it.

Most owners discover the problem by accident. They’re in the yard, glance up, and notice the cap is tilted, rusted through at a seam, or just missing entirely after a windstorm off the Passaic. Others notice rain inside the firebox, a wet spot on the ceiling near the flue, or birds that have taken up residence in what used to be a quiet chimney. The cap is the first line of defense against water and animals, and in Clifton’s freeze-thaw winters, a compromised cap starts doing real damage faster than most people expect.

Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To

Olympia Chimney manufactures caps for their stainless steel chimney systems, with the most common installs in Clifton being standard round-flue mesh caps and vacuum-grip models that slip over the flue tile without fasteners. If your cap has an Olympia stamp or came with an Olympia liner system installed in the last 10 to 15 years, your replacement needs to match the inside and outside flue dimensions, not just the brand name.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into in Clifton regularly: an Olympia cap is sized to a specific flue tile OD, not the nominal fireplace size. A “13×13” flue tile actually measures about 12.5 inches square, so the cap an owner orders online without measuring usually arrives too small or too large. We measure the flue in three places, because flue tile in older Clifton homes is rarely perfectly square after thirty years of thermal cycling. On the OEM-vs-aftermarket question: Olympia’s own stainless caps hold up well here, but if the original is out of production or backordered, we stock quality equivalents from Gelco and Famco that match Olympia flue dimensions properly. As an independent service provider, we’re not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, so we install whichever cap actually fits the flue and lasts.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Visible rust streaking on the cap or flue exterior. This tells you water is pooling somewhere it shouldn’t. Even 304 stainless develops rust streaks at weld points when the protective oxide layer is compromised by years of acidic flue gasses and Clifton’s road-salt air.
  • Rain in the firebox after a storm. The cap’s hood or drip edge has failed and water is running straight down the flue. Left alone through one winter, this water freezes and thaws inside the flue tile and starts the spalling process, which is the brick face popping off in flakes.
  • Bird or squirrel sounds in the chimney. The mesh screen has a hole or the cap has shifted off its seat. A raccoon can tear open a compromised mesh panel in under a minute, and once one nests, you’re dealing with a completely different cost category.
  • Debris at the bottom of the flue when you look up from the firebox. This means the mesh has failed and leaves, twigs, and shingle grit are actively entering the flue. The cap is still there, but it’s no longer functioning.
  • Visible rust-through at the cap’s hood or seam. You can see daylight through a hole from the ground, or the hood has separated from the base. Once a seam splits, the cap is done. Patching it buys a season in North Jersey weather, and not a reliable one.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A standard Olympia-compatible chimney cap replacement in Clifton runs $185 to $420 installed. That’s the range for most flue sizes we encounter in the city, from mobile home 6-inch flues in the more compact neighborhoods near Main Avenue to large 13×13 clay flues in the older Athenia and Richfield stock. A custom stainless cap for an oversized or unusual flue can push to $600, but we’ll tell you before you agree to anything, in writing.

The price includes the cap itself, which is $75 to $180 depending on size and material grade; removal and disposal of the failed cap; and installation with a documented photo record when we’re done, per Clause 4 of the Haven Standard. If the flue tile beneath the cap is cracked or spalled, we’ll show you photos from the camera before recommending anything additional, and that repair is quoted separately, in writing, before work starts. Corrine Halstead and our Clifton crew never hand over an invoice that wasn’t put in writing before the first tool came off the van.

DIY or Call Us?

DIY or Call Us?

If you can safely reach your roof with a proper ladder and you’re comfortable working at height, you can inspect a cap from the ground with binoculars and note the obvious rot and rust. You can also check the firebox for moisture and listen for animals. That’s the honest limit of the DIY scope here.

Actually replacing the cap in Clifton means ladder work on a pitched roof, frequently with snow or leaf debris still on it, and handling a section of stainless steel with sharp post-manufacture edges while standing over a flue. A fall from even a one-story roof hump is a hospital visit. We recommend you call us at (551) 282-9640, and we’ll measure, quote, and complete the cap replacement with the right size part and a photo record before we leave. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we.
