DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement: The Clifton Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex flue liner replacement in Clifton typically runs between $1,800 and $4,600 installed, depending on the liner diameter, flue height, and whether we’re replacing the entire system or one damaged section. We stock DuraFlex-compatible liner components on our trucks, and most replacements are completed in one visit. You’re probably on this page because the liner you installed ten or twelve years ago is showing its age: rust bleeding through the corrugation, a crack you can see from the top, or a chimney sweep’s camera showing you a tear that wasn’t there last season.

The DuraFlex brand is a double-wall, corrugated stainless steel liner. We see these fail in three predictable ways in Clifton, and none of them are subtle: the inner wall pinholes from condensate, the corrugation splits at the furnace connector, or the top plate tears away from the masonry. If you’re heating with an oil or gas appliance vented through a DuraFlex liner in an older Clifton home, the failure point is almost always near the bottom where the liner meets the appliance connector. That’s where heat, moisture, and acidic condensation chew at the metal.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

The DuraFlex line is typically sold as flexible 304 or 316L stainless steel liner in diameter sizes from 3″ through 8″, with the 4″ and 6″ sizes being the most common in Clifton residential applications. DuraFlex’s corrugated profile is deeper than some other liners we see, so fitting a mismatched top plate or connector is one of the more common local mistakes we correct. If your liner’s label is gone, we measure the inside diameter with a digital caliper. Don’t guess: a 4″ DuraFlex is not interchangeable with a 4″ Olympia or Gelco liner, because the outside diameter and corrugation pitch differ. The connectors and top plates are sized to the OD, not the ID.

On OEM versus aftermarket parts for DuraFlex, the math is straightforward. For a simple top plate or rain cap, a quality aftermarket part from a supplier with a written spec sheet is completely fine, and it’s usually 20 to 30 percent less than the DuraFlex-branded equivalent. For the liner itself or a custom tee at a furnace connection, we source DuraFlex-branded or equivalent 316L material. In a salt-air or high-condensate environment, 316L outperforms 304 enough to justify the increase, and we’ll tell you when that applies. Clifton’s winter freeze/thaw cycles don’t affect the liner directly as much as they affect the mortar around the chimney top, but we regularly see water infiltration at the chase cover or top plate that then destroys a liner from the inside.

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing
  • Rust streaks or orange staining on the exterior brick near the flue opening. This almost always means water has found its way between the liner and the masonry, usually from a failed top plate or chase cover. That rust is the liner’s own metal bleeding through.
  • Flaky black scale or rust particles falling into the appliance connection. The inner wall is spalling, which means the liner has become brittle enough that pieces are delaminating under heat cycles.
  • A smell of exhaust or combustion gases in the basement or mechanical room. This is not a smell to troubleshoot by lighting a match or waving a detector around. Call us at (551) 282-9640. A breached liner is a carbon monoxide path into your living space.
  • Visible cracks or splits at the corrugation joints, usually found during a cleaning or inspection. We photograph this and show it to you on the screen when we’re on site. You should not have to take anyone’s word for a crack.
  • Unexplained moisture inside the firebox or around the appliance flue connection. Condensate is a normal byproduct of gas and oil combustion, but when a liner is compromised, that acidic condensate wicks into surrounding material instead of staying inside the flue path.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the breakdown across the jobs we actually do in Clifton, not a phone screening range:

  • 4″ or 5″ gas liner replacement in a single-story ranch or modest two-story: $1,800 - $2,600
  • 6″ liner replacement in a two-story or taller chimney: $2,400 - $3,200
  • Full system with new top plate, rain cap, and tee connector: $2,900 - $4,100
  • Chase cover fabrication and replacement (often needed with a liner job in Clifton’s wet winters): $500 - $1,100

Every one of those numbers includes removal of the old liner, installation of the new one, a written scope and written warranty before we start, and a documented photo record of the completed work under Haven Standard Clause 4. If a competitor has given you a written quote, bring it. We’ll give you a free second opinion on it. Corrine Halstead has run Level Two Chimney Clifton this way since 2009: price on the page, camera in the flue, no exceptions.

You can safely inspect the top of your chimney from ground level with binoculars and check for a missing or rusted rain cap. You can also check the appliance connection for visible rust staining or soot at the joint. What we do not recommend is pulling a flexible liner yourself. The failure behind most liner hazards in Clifton isn’t the liner itself; it’s the cracked flue tile, melted chase cover, or dislocated top plate that’s letting water and combustion gas go where they shouldn’t. We use scaffold or roof ladders and drop a camera first, then the liner. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we.

If you see rust, cracking, or smell exhaust, call us at (551) 282-9640. We’ll put eyes and a camera on it before anyone touches a tool.
